Going in too Soon

But of course, like the best things that come out of recording studios, the flipside is just as important. At least our demo-wielding psychopath has an idea of what she wants the record to sound like. Equally as dangerous is the totally clueless band that goes in blithely assuming that the studio itself will suddenly crackle into life and fill them with hundreds of great ideas. In the fabulous liner notes to Ben Folds Five’s “Whatever & Ever Amen,” Mr. Folds comments that “arrangements were rehearsed or at least discussed,” prior to recording. Bands regularly omit this precaution.

If you go to record a song that is only half-written, everyone will have an idea of how to fix it. Even the drummer. Now do you see the problem? Most of your very expensive time will be wasted in trying to tell each other why all your ideas are shit. Which means all members will cling even more tightly to their suggestions. Which means…well all the stuff we’ve already noted in the Rehearsal Tips in chapter 2 as being not great for band morale.
